One can only marvel at the way celebrities maintain their perfect skin despite their age, busy schedules and the need to wear on-screen makeup. On the other hand, it is not at all surprising when you know that their impeccable looks have their facialist Joanna Vargas - aka glowing skin expert - to thank for.
Joanna owns several beauty salons in Los Angeles and New York, where she has successfully introduced her own cosmetic line and now looks after such famous faces as Sofia Coppola, Naomi Watts, Helena Christensen and the forever young Julianne Moore. We discover the cosmetologist’s key tips which not only help achieve perfect skin but can also be implemented at home. It is so simple, but so effective.
Use a serum with active ingredients
«Thanks to its molecular structure and ability to maintain an optimal level of hydration, serum is able to penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin and nourish it with active ingredients more effectively than any cream,” – explains Joanna on her blog. The beauty guru recommends paying particular attention to serums containing vitamin C due to their ability to slow down ageing and provide a skin lightening effect.
Peeling twice a week
Joanna recommends putting some time aside for at-home peeling twice a week, because even the most effective cream is unable to penetrate the outer layers of the skin if the keratinised layer of cells is in its way. Prioritise products which contain lactic acid.
Drink green juices
This perfect substitute for a post-lunch cup of coffee can change your skin in a matter of days. The components found in such juices fill the skin with oxygen and stimulate lymph flow. Start by consuming an avocado a day or by adding it to your smoothie. The green fruit provides you with all the necessary fats and beneficial nutrients which will promote internal hydration and restore glow.
Go easy on coffee
This source of morning buzz is also one of the main reasons for skin dehydration and dark circles under your eyes. For those simply unable to give it up, we suggest that you at least try and limit your consumption in the afternoon by replacing it with a freshly squeezed juice instead. At the same time coffee-based masks and scrubs are great at calming down inflamed skin and reducing redness due to their high antioxidant content.
The power of neroli oil
This secret ingredient is used by all of Joanna’s VIP clients. Neroli essential oil is one of the priciest out there but it’s well worth your money when used in skincare. It purifies clogged pores, improves elasticity and contributes to smoother skin, while removing visible imperfections and stimulating the growth of new cells. Thanks to its vitamin C content, it makes the skin glowing and youthful, not to mention that it is a natural antidepressant.
“For best results you will need 6-10 drops of neroli. It can be combined with any carrier oil, almond, grape, avocado or jojoba. Apply the mixture to your face and body after a relaxing bath,” is her advice.
Massage your face
Massage is an important part of facial care which many neglect. If your skin is prone to dryness, massage upwards in circular motions, starting with the neck where the arteries are located. This will encourage the absorption of nourishing treatments by the tissues. If your skin is sensitive and prone to acne, massage in the opposite direction, from the top down.
Always use a sunscreen
Many assume that a sunscreen should only be used in the hot summer months or on holiday but this is fundamentally wrong. Active UV rays are the main cause of oxidative processes and skin cancer. They are not blocked by the clouds and have an impact all year round. Joanna Vargas recommends daily use of sun blocks with at least 30 SPF.
Dedicate time to evening cleansing
Night time is when our body recovers and kick starts its regeneration processes. It is essential to cleanse your face every night, removing the last traces of makeup and impurities which speed up the ageing process. To calm your skin, you can also use chamomile or green tea.
Use hydrating masks
“I use sheet masks every time I board a plane to keep my skin moisturised. Nobody pays attention because they are all asleep but this kind of beauty show does lead to some interesting conversations with the air hostesses, for whom I always take a few extra masks,” – shares Joanna.
